Why Mumbai is a different PR market

Mumbai is home to the Hindi film industry and to a large part of India’s business, finance and entertainment media. Many national publications, TV channels and digital newsrooms have their key desks here. That makes the city a strong place to build press coverage, and also a crowded one. Journalists get far more pitches than they can use, so the quality of an agency’s relationships and judgement matters more than the size of its team.

What a PR agency in Mumbai actually does

A good PR agency usually covers some or all of the following:

Positioning and messaging: deciding what story you should be telling
Media relations: pitching journalists, arranging interviews and securing coverage
Press releases and announcements: writing and distributing real news
Thought leadership: getting you quoted, featured or invited to speak
Reputation management: protecting you from damaging stories and responding fast when something goes wrong
Event and launch PR: getting the right people in the room and the right coverage afterwards

No agency is equally strong at all of these. Ask which two or three they do best.

7 things to check before you hire

Do they have experience in your space? An agency that has worked with entertainers may not understand B2B manufacturing, and the reverse is also true. Ask for examples close to your industry.
Can they show recent coverage? Ask for links to articles from the last few months, not a list of logos from years ago. Check that the coverage is genuine editorial, not paid or sponsored content.
How do they actually work with media? Ask how they pitch and which journalists they speak to regularly. Be wary of anyone who talks only about databases and mass emails.
Do they start with strategy? A good agency will want to understand your business and audit your current visibility before they pitch anything.
Who will you actually work with? Many agencies send senior people to the first meeting and hand the work to juniors. Ask who will manage your account every day.
How will they report results? Look for clear reports covering coverage, reach and business impact, not just a folder of clippings.
How flexible is the contract? Some agencies insist on long retainers. Others offer project-based work. Choose what fits your needs, and ask about it directly.

Red flags to watch for

Guaranteed coverage. No honest agency can guarantee that a publication will print a story.
Vague answers about how they work. If they cannot explain their process simply, they may not have one.
Only talking about numbers of articles. Ten weak mentions are worth less than one strong feature.
Pressure to sign quickly. A good agency will give you time to decide.
No questions about your goals. An agency that does not ask what you want to achieve is selling a package, not a strategy.

Questions to ask in the first meeting

Which clients are most like us, and what did you do for them?
What would the first 90 days look like?
Who will be our day to day contact?
How do you decide which stories to pitch?
What will you need from us, and how often?
How and when will we see results?

Should the agency be based in Mumbai?

It helps. Being in the same city makes it easier to meet journalists, attend events and respond quickly when something happens. Many of the people who decide what gets covered are in Mumbai, and relationships are built face to face as much as by email. That said, local presence is only a start. The agency still needs the right experience and a clear process.

Check their experience in your industry, ask to see recent genuine coverage, understand their process and confirm who will work on your account every day.

Do PR agencies guarantee press coverage?

No honest agency can. Editors decide what gets published. A good agency improves your chances through strong stories, relationships and timing.

Is a retainer necessary for PR?

Not always. Some agencies, including Sorta Famous, offer project-based support, which can suit launches, events and specific campaigns.

How long does PR take to work?

Some announcements get coverage within days, but building a steady reputation usually takes months. Treat PR as a long-term investment in trust.
